Abstract This paper, which was presented at the Melbourne Shakespeare Society meeting of 23 October 2004, offers an analytical and historical introduction to the play Ralph Roister Doister, in preparation for the rehearsed reading that was scheduled for the following week. Ralph Roister Doister was written by the English playwright, Nicholas Udall, probably between 1551 and 1553. This paper provides an outline of English theatre in the sixteen-century, an analysis of the influences of Roman theatre and humanism on sixteenth century theatre and an introduction to the author and the play.
